Depression is one of the most misunderstood words in the century. The meaning of the word may vary depending on a person’s perspective. Most of the people use the oft repeated quote “I Am Feeling So Depressed”. However the reality is way too different. We use the above said quote to describe our feeling of loss. True Clinical Depression is however a mood disorder. It involves the feeling of sadness, aloofness or probably anger and frustration.
Depression is not a CHOICE but something that just is a result of incidents that begin to influence our mind. It may involve some kind of refusal from a loved one or backstabbing from a person whom you trusted the most or probably a decision against you. It may be caused as result of a photo on a social media or probably a call from an old classmate. The described situation acts as a trigger for our mind. So we can clearly conclude that everyone right from you and me are susceptible to depression. So depression is basically the disease of civilization. It acts as a precursor to various other dangerous situations like melancholy, introversion, rumination and obsessiveness. It may involve a feeling of numbness or isolation despite being surrounded by many people. It occurs as a result of disconnect between your heart and your true self. For example in a normal situation a refusal may be taken sportively by sulking or feeling sad. The feeling of sadness passes but the feeling of depression is a severely perplexing psychological condition which stays with us for a long time. We as people are finding it very difficult to come to terms with the fact that none of us are perfect. Sometimes, we strive for perfection, this perfection threatens our need to survive first and that finally leads to the condition of depression. So we basically feel disconnected from our true flawed self and this disconnect begins to dig deeper from a physical scar to a mental scar.
However, there is a way to reclaim ourselves from this sinking ship. It is a long painful process which begins with acknowledgement. If we acknowledge the fact that we are suffering from depression then that is half the battle won. It is the
most difficult step and most of the people take a long time to realize this. Once you realize this, the next step is pondering over the causes for this disease. This is followed by eliminating those causes. For example a person is negatively impacting your life, then the elimination of that person from your life will ensure more happiness in your life. This is a crucial step as it will help you become a better human being later and understand people better because fighting depression will definitely be a life changing experience. With the western culture gaining popularity, people are living their life as an illusion. People have begun to believe that science and medicine can cure everything. However, this is a fallacy. Medicine is like the oil which ensures smoothness in a working machine. However, this oil cannot start a damaged machine. So, it has become very important to understand that medicine can only cure chemical imbalances of the body and not the hardware problems. However, I am not discounting the fact that medicine plays an important role in subsidizing the pain. However, the pain removal will take place only if the pain creator is destroyed.
A few minor changes in our lifestyle can help us insure ourselves against depression. The most important thing is to remain true to ourselves. If your mind and body differ in opinion, then it is important to retrospect and choose the correct path. The next task is to remain optimistic and avoid negative thoughts to every extent possible. This step will ensure that we stay away from the path of self-destruction and anger. If you aren’t able to control your anger, then develop a hobby like gardening or writing, which may help you calm down. The last but a paramount thing is to ensure that you make a good friend who is willing to be like a rock in your life. That person must have the capability to deal with stubbornness and must be willing to do whatever it takes to help you. These things aren’t easy and won’t be like a bed of roses but will be like a road full of potholes. While encountering this road it remains an important task not to take the wrong route i.e. falling prey to drinking alcohol or drugs or smoking. Drinking or smoking will create a high in the starting but will later be the cause of the depression rather than helping in its mitigation. They may also lead to a substance abuse problem. So, the best thing to do is to stay away from the people who are trying to include
you in these activities. We must also constantly seek strength from the things that we do and seek strength from our relationships. We should also try to stay away from social media like Facebook as they give a distorted picture of the reality. We must listen to meaningful music which may inspire feelings of togetherness. We must learn to put ourselves first and everyone else. Despite the fact that it may sound selfish, it will help you in the long run. We must pamper and love ourselves first and then the others. For example, rather than treating your friends first, treat yourself to your favorite dish or fruit or anything like that. The last but the most important thing is to stay HAPPY AND LIVE HAPPILY. Depression is only a phase of our life, we must learn to move on.
