South Indian Block Busters of 2014

South Indian Block Busters of 2014

BANGALORE DAYS

Malayam film industry was on a fun filled ride this year with Anjali Menon’s movie Bangalore Days, that will stay on your mind a long time. This movie just scared me with its nearly 3 hours run-time but from the moment I started watching it, I was just blown off by its appealing content, narrated in its contemporary style. 7 lead actors in a single movie, OMG that’s humongous. But each character has it’s relevance without getting you bored and filling this lengthy movie with fun, emotions, sarcasm, love and passion.
The story of three cousins, who play the central protagonists and their life in the beautiful garden city.Dilquer Salman shines as an aggressive, passionate rebel ‘Arjun’ who will build a special bonding with physically challenged ‘RJ Sarah’ played by Parvathy. Nazriya had done a perfect job looking delightful as well as sentimental as ‘Divya’. Navin Pauly played the duffer ‘Kuttan’ who transfers sensibly though in course. Some good performance by Fahadh as ‘Das’. Isha Talwar and Nithya Menon have less screen presence by adds up to the plot.
Bangalore Days turns out to be the biggest block buster in Kerela this year.A great movie that reminds you of all the minute friendships and relations of life.

MANAM

This year’s Telugu block buster that left me mesmerized was Manam. A fitting tribute to the Telugu legendary actor ANR by the Akkineni family. Vikram Kumar has written a beautiful story for period drama Manam, which spans 100 years lying between 1920 and 2020 with a reincarnation angle in it and is based on the concept of eternal love. Top notch technical values like cinematography, art, music and editing made it a pleasant journey. The 5 lead actors have been the greatest assets above all. The on screen chemistry in love scenes between Naga Chaitanya & Samantha and Nagarjuna & Shriya  was hilarious. The boozing scene where three generation actors get drunk had been the highlight of the film. Nagarjuna have done one of the best role in his career and Samantha was at her best.
Every moment of the film is so engrossing that you will never feel a single scene boring. A great experiment with fair entertainment quotient and excellent screenplay worked out really well. A real classic family entertainer which will ride you through all kinds of emotions. A perfect tribute to late ANR and a huge treat to the 100 years of Indian cinema.

KATHTHI

This Tamil block buster released Diwali this year turned to be one of the best movie in Vijay’s career. Vijay has used this opportunity to play diverse roles in the same movie and proves his experience as a performer and as an entertainer. He excels in the scenes like visualizing blueprint and coin flipping fight. The direction and action choreographer must be credited for showing such incredulous scenes in abelievable manner. Coming to director A.R.Murugadoss, he has touched upon many issues close to his heart such as rampant corruption, farmer suicides, the plight of senior citizens, water scarcity, the workings of the sensational news-hungry media and also goes on to vilify the corporates and their aggressive expansion plans without considering their CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives. Samantha do have much screen presence but fewer dialogues. Songs doesn’t seem that good to me while background score sounds fine.
To sum up, Kaththi is a grand production which rides on Vijay's dual roles, the social interest angle and some impactful scenes which are part of the mix. It ends up as the biggest entertainer as well as biggest grosser of Tamil Industry this year.
