The eyes are the window into the soul -- or at least the
mind. What if they reveal everything on your mind…?? What if your confidential
affairs are revealed because of your eyes..? And do you who your enemy is..??
Let me tell you it is your pupil. Don’t worry known to few, practiced by none.
Measuring the diameter of the pupil, the part of the eye that
changes size to let in more light, can show what a person is paying attention
to. Pupillometry, as it's called, has been used in social psychology, clinical
psychology, humans, animals, children, infants -- and it should be used even
more.
The pupil is best known for changing
size in reaction to light. In a dark room, your pupils open wide to let in more
light, as soon as you step outside into the sunlight, the pupils shrink to
pinpricks. This keeps the retina at the back of the eye from being overwhelmed
by bright light. Something similar happens in response to psychological
stimuli. When someone sees something they want to pay closer attention to, the
pupil enlarges. Apart from that a person’s thoughts and decisions can be
analyzed through the movement of pupils even before he expresses it.
Researchers are still working on this concept and have found mesmerizing
results. Though it's not clear why this happens. One idea is that, by
essentially enlarging the field of the visual input, it's beneficial to visual
exploration. Conjuring up a visual image in the mind -- like a sunny day or a
night sky -- has a corresponding effect on the size of our pupils, as if we
were actually seeing the image, according to new research.
Because
humans cannot voluntarily constrict the eyes' pupils, the presence of pupillary
adjustments to imaginary light presents a strong case for mental imagery as a
process based on brain states similar to those which arise during actual
perception. The technology already exists for
measuring pupils -- many modern psychology studies use eye-tracking technology,
for example, to see what a subject is looking at, Laeng (researcher in this
field) and his coauthors hope to convince other psychological scientists to use
this method. Using this technology we can be able to track the changes in
diameter of the pupil with greater accuracy. With this technology, there are as
many disadvantages as there are advantages.
Pupil measurement might also be
useful for studying babies. Tiny infants can't tell you what they're paying
attention to. By studying the change in the diameter of those tiny pupils, we
can be able to understand what they focus on. Further, new outlook of eye
hypnotism can be defined on this basis. Many notorious criminals can be changed
using this. Crime rate can be reduced. One more interesting application of this
pupillometry is found in treatment of Austism Spectrum disorder.
Well, those are few advantages of this pupillometry. There
are handful of disadvantages too. For example, consider a soldier captured by
an enemy country. Soldier will be in panic and decides nothing to tell about
his country’s plans and secrets. When he decides that he shouldn’t tell, all
the secrets about his country will strike his mind for a second for sure. At
that moment, his pupil rapidly changes its diameter. By tracking its movement,
all the thoughts can be easily studied. That is obviously quite dangerous.
This is found in many literary works also. Ancient
Indian books are great source of knowledge. Ancient Indian Scientist Charaka
has written about this in his famous book Charakasamhita too. If you are a good
reader, then you might know about this. A famous author, Amish Tripati, has
mentioned about this concept in his Shiva Trilogy, where Maharshi Bhrigu is
well known for his talent of reading person’s pupil and getting to know about
thoughts in his mind at the point of time. Through tis we can come to know if
the person is speaking truth or not. So this can be used as a lie detector also
and it is purely harmless to the subject (as far as scientists have
discovered).
Here there is a point to be noted. As far as you
control your mind, your thoughts cannot be studied. So there nothing to worried!!
