GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY (GLT)

Goal Line Technology .This is an interesting feature introduced by FIFA officially into football .This technology gives the signal when ever the football crosses the goal line .This was introduced by FIFA after having a situation in 2010 worldcup during a match when Frank Lampard ,England midfielder shot from midfield it was struck to cross bar and landed inside goal line, when it bounced up it was pulled out by goalkeeper .This was not called a goal as referee had no vision of that.

WHAT IS GLT UPTO:-
The GLT system must be accurate.
->The indication of whether a goal has been scored must be immediate and automatically confirmed withi none second.
-> The indication of whether a goal has been scored will be communicated only to the match officials (via the referee’s watch, by vibration and visual signal).There are several systems given by Fifa, they are based on camera-tracking or magnetic field sensors

 ->Hawk-eye
-> Goalref
-> Goalcontrol
-> Goal Minder
-> Cairos GLT system

HAWK-EYE:-
Hawk eye system was developed in 1999.This is a fast camera device which gives us a video in a negative form and the pitching and changes in the frame will be displayed by a dot or etc.This is already introduced in the sports like cricket,tennis,snooker and etc. Seven cameras are required per goal post, allowing the system to still operate when several cameras are blocked or covered when it has no vision.This system follows principle of triangulation .By using the visual images and timing data provided by high-speed video cameras at different locations around the area of play.It uses high frame rate cameras to triangulate and track the ball in flight. The software calculates the ball’s location in each frame by identifying the pixels that correspond to the ball.

GOALREF:-
GoalRef uses a similar magnetic field-based technology to Cairos GLT, but instead of the ball acting as a sensor, the goal post detects the passing of the ball through it.This system has a passive electronic circuit embedded in the ball and a low-frequency magnetic field around the goal. By producing low magnetic fields around the goals, GoalRef creates the radio equivalent of a light curtain. As soon as the ball has wholly crossed the goal line between the posts, a change in the magnetic field is detected . It is further sent to officials to get a result.

  GOAL CONTROL:-
It consists of 14 high-speed cameras mounted around the stadium, seven pointed at each goal  to track the flight of the ball and detect whether it has cross the goal line or not. It is capable of taking pictures at a very fast rate.This data is sent to the central image processing center. The referee is given a watch displaying the camera's data which will vibrate and display a signal of a goal which is transmitted wirelessly and connected.

GOAL MINDER:-
Goalminder is another type of computer based system, this uses high-speed cameras built into the goal posts and crossbar to deliver visual display to the referee and this decision is left to officials.It is the cheapest of all the goal line technologies.

CAIROS GLT SYSTEM:-Cairos Technologies and Adidas produce a system which does not depend on cameras, it depends on the magnetic field to track the ball. A sensor is embedded inside the ball, which detects the magnetic field produced by thin wires run underneath the penalty box .These wires are placed by digging in holes under penalty box area .These wires are connected to a system which tracks the position of the ball via the sensor and detects when the ball crosses the goalline. Thin cables with electrical current running through them are buried in the penalty box and behind the goal line it makes a grid. The sensors will measure the magnetic grids and transmits  the data to a computer which confirms that  if the ball it’s a goal or not and if the ball has crossed the line or not. There will be a connection with the referees watch as a radio signal will be sent to the referee's watch within few seconds.The unique investment per stadium is about 200,000 to 300,000 euros [$270,000 to $406,000].It is quite costly to install and to maintain too. It usually takes four people to work for five days to install and a maximum of two weeks per venue.

 ADVANTAGES OF carious GLT system:-
1)It is independent of outside conditions, weather, time of day, sun light and shadow, wind, fog or snow. Even when the visibility of the ball is restricted by several players or through the body of the goalkeeper the system detects with the same accuracy.
2) The human input is restricted to simply switching the system components on before each match. This can be easily done by the referee team. No additional staff is needed.
3)It has only a minimum impact to the stadium infrastructure. The cables are not visible. The standard goal frames can be used as well as the standard goal net.
4)It can be installed in just a few days and is ready to use directly after the installation.
5) Only a small amount of space is needed to store the central computing unit, the balls and the watches – no server or control room is necessary.

It will absorb the cost for the installation of the technology and will only change a small portion of what it would cost to pay four referees per game. In return for the free installation the technology provider would seek the rights to sell sponsorship of the system at each ground.
