In today’s world where the invisible air is full of radio
signals we use many wireless technologies.
No wireless technology offers everything that you want for an application. We just have to choose multiple technologies in the same thing e.g for data transfer we will use WiFi not the Bluetooth and for file transfer many people use Bluetooth not the wifi. This article is about the various wireless technologies though many technologies are not covered 9 Degrees personally think that these are most used ones.

This article is about the various wireless technologies though many technologies are not covered 9 Degrees personally think that these are most used ones.
ZIG BEE(IEEE 802.15.4):
Before I start telling about this let me give some introduction of what it is…? ZigBee is the technology of the data transfer through wireless networks. It is LAN(Local area network)Why should we use ZigBee….?? If it is wireless data transfer then what is the difference between Wifi and this…??The main reason why we should use ZigBee is for the applications that typically require low power and long life for battery-powered sensors. It provides a secure network. The main difference is that it offers a very low data rate and provides a line of sight range of up to 80 meters only. The main disadvantage is that it cannot provide a high data speed . The other thing is if we have WiFi working in the same band as ZigBee there are many chances that Wifi could affect the Zigbee though it does not affect deliverability but it slows down the process
BLUETOOTH :
It is renowned for being the most used communication technology for transferring photos, videos, songs and other media. It allows a gross data rate of up to 2.1Mbits/s with a latency of around 10ms.It is best suited for environments where multiple wireless devices can be connected in the same radio environment and can still operate flawlessly. It is specified for devices that have to maintain a small footprint ,low power consumption and be cost efficient.
The main disadvantage of this is the low data rate and only one file can be sent at one time.
BLUETOOTH SMART:
It is designed to maintain a good balance between the data rates and range. Though the line of sight is limited to 50 meters but it takes just 6ms to wake up. The main advantage of this is that products that benefit from lower power, a much longer battery life are non line of sight and have a two way operation benefit the most from Bluetooth Smart. The other thing is that it’s ability to connect with a large number of nodes. The disadvantages of it are its PAN(Personal Area Network) and the other is that it’s band may mix up with other bands and the transfer may be altered or sometimes it may get terminated.ZWAVE:
It is alternative that suits the residential control and automations market. It has a maximum range of 30 meters a bandwidth of 40 Kbit/s and operates with low latency. The main advantage of this is that it operates on gigahertz band where no other band can interfere it. This is good for low power applications. The disadvantages are it has low data transfer rate and there are chances that it may get the interference from the cordless phones and remotes.WIRELESS USB:
It is the technology that is targeted ar peripherals and similar electronic devices. It operates in the 3.1 to 10.6Ghz range and can send 480Mbit/s up to 3 meters and 110Mbit/s up to 10 meters. The main advantage of this is that the ultra-wideband signals used in Wireless USB will not be affected by nearby devices running WiFi, Bluetooth or even by cordless phones. It makes it an ideal technology to be used in the living room or work environment where a multitude of alternate wireless devices are also in use.The main disadvantage is it’s implementation costs.
NFC(NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION):
It is PAN(Personal Area Network) technology that allows devices such as smart phones to communicate over a small area. It works one ISO/IEC 14443,ISO 18000-3 which are defined by the NFC forum. It works in the 13.56MHz band it has a range of less than 20cm and a bit rate of 424 k bit/s. The main advantage of this is contact less transactions and data exchange. NFC tags can also be placed on posters and programmed such that if a device touches them they give us the additional information such as maps ,Web addresses …etc. The disadvantages are that it is very costly and only 10 out 100 phones use NFC.WI-FI:
This is the most common Wireless LAN technology. It was designed as a wireless extension to Ethernet and is used for all sorts of applications. If has a range of 200 meters in the 2.4GHz of band and a data output of 11-54MBits/s for IEEE 802.11b/g. As you all know the advantages of this are it has grown to be one of the most used technologies for accessing the Internet and thus has a high availability in consumer electronics. The disadvantages are that it has high power consumption and somewhat low coverage area.WiMax:
It has the ability to provide a maximum speed of 70 Mbit/s and cover an area up to 50 kilometers. It has band from 1.25MHz to 20MHz. The main advantage of this is that it can cover the maximum area with a fair bit rate. The disadvantage is that high power consumption and sometimes it may overkill your application.These are the some of the wireless technologies which are present apart from these there are some other technologies which are not that important. Anyway as the technology is growing there are chances that new ones can come and occupy these techs and give us more comfort. Finally the conclusion it’s up to you to choose the one which suits you the most .
