Top9 SINGLES of 2014
1) Blank Space
‘Blank Space’ is the second track on 1989 and is being credited as the Best Song not only from the album but also in Taylor Swift’s whole career just narrowly edging ‘Love Story’, ‘You belong with me’, ‘I knew you were trouble’. This song sounds like the ones of Lorde and Wilson Phillips, but Taylor’s style of presentation with melody and hooks made this skeletal track perfect. The lyrics of the song seems like specific experience of Taylor Swift being ‘Taylor Swift’ with words like “Got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane’. With every pins attached, ‘Blank Space’ stands as the best song of the year.
2) Problem
The leading single from Ariana Grande’s second album ‘My Everything’. The song features Iggy Azalea’s rap and Big Sean’s whispers. Grande steps forward with a big, bold sound for the first time to broaden the appeal of ‘Problem’. Despite the unbeat rap, whispers and aggressive note of
music, the song presents somewhat more difficult emotions. It is a song asserting strength and independence in a failed relation. There is ‘one less problem without you’, but the longing seems to be still there, and that is the biggest problem.
3) Night Changes
One Direction’s second single from their FOURth album. With a soothing tune it depicts the typical wintery dates. The beautiful lyrics like ‘Even when the night changes, it will never change me and you’ reminds of their past melody hits ‘Gotta Be You’, ‘Little Things’, ‘You & I’. Every time we think 1D can’t possibly get any better, they come in and knock the breathe out of you by their pure perfection, overwhelming their huge fan base.
4) Amnesia
After a thumping success of their first single “She looks so perfect’ with their pop/rock beats and boyish looks, they made some fans expecting a little much more from the Australian boy-band ‘5 Seconds Of Summer’. At the right time they landed with a breakup melody ‘Amnesia’ which
stood as one of the leading single of this year. This song proved that 5sos can make some really good music, piling up expectations for their upcoming career.
5) Animals
Maroon 5 after their pretty good success of their lead single ‘Maps’ from their new album ‘V’, they released their second single ‘Animals’. This is abit of good pop music with great beats and Adam’s humming bird vocals. But if you pay some close attention to the lyrics, it might be a littlke weird with predatory nature. This song will surely get you carried away by its infectious melody and its ‘lie-lie-lie’s and ‘ny-ny-ny’s.
6) All About That Bass
Meghan Trainor’s new single which pretty unbeatably stood at the top of Billboard charts for many weeks even by facing tough competition from Taylor Swift’s duo ‘Shake it off’, ‘Balnk Space’. Maghan’s strong voice accompanied by some peculiar instrumentation made it stand at the top of the charts in almost every country.
7) Rude
Magic’s Rude is a kind of song which we find very rarely. Simple beats and vocal but these are not the attributes that made it special. It’s ll in the song’s theme and lyrics. This is not a love song with lyrics praising a girl’s beauty. It is a song sung to ask the girl’s father to marry his daughter with him. The video ends up inconclusively but it is a narration worth hearing.
8) Talk Dirty To Me
Jason Derulo’s single from his new album made its entry in Australia, New Zealand & UK last year. But it was in Jan,2014 it was released in US. With the horn sounds backing the chorus & sexualized lyrics, it became the craziest song of the year. 2 Chainz rap backed by his X-rated lyrics balanced the PG-rated verses of Derulo.
Coldplay’s lead single from their album ‘Ghost Stories’ matches with their previous drowsy songs. With some beautiful music from the piano & vocal this song might have become a song worth listening. But the collaboration of Coldplay with Avicii produced this great success for the British rock band. This song even stood in the charts of many countries for a little long time.
