The day has arrived
where everything is beautiful, red roses around, words filled with love ring
the doorbells of our hearts, promises of commitment fills our minds with
contentment and the feeling of completeness is the epitome of this day. Couples
spend their time with their loved ones this day and express their love for each
other maybe like never before….. Is it the magic that the word ‘Valentine’ has
spread? Does that word have a special meaning? What actually is the history of
Valentine’s Day? Let’s look into it.
There was this saint by
name Saint Valentinus in the 3rd century A.D who lived in a Roman
empire under the kingship of King Claudius II. Valentinus was a Christian
Martyr and Claudius didn’t like this. He ordered Valentinus to change his belief
system and to pray only Roman Gods. But Valentinus was never afraid and even
death couldn’t deter him from practicing his beliefs. As punishment, he was
imprisoned.
Even in jail, nothing
disturbed him and no one could grab his attention towards them when he was in
prayer. Everybody was astonished to see what he was learning. During his last
days, the jailer sent his blind daughter Julia to Valentinus so that she could
learn something about divinity. Valentinus had a good relation with her and
treated her like his daughter. She was taught how God loves every child of his
and all their mistakes will be forgiven. For this, we need to treat every
individual equal to us and we need to spread love to everyone. Also, the most
important thing is to have belief in God.
On the eve of his
death, Valentinus sent a letter to Juila and signed ‘From your Valentine’ in
the end. This was spread to everyone on February 14th 270 A.D and
this day was declared to be the day when love, affection and devotion should be
exchanged to the world.
And now I feel this is
one of the most misunderstood days in the history of this world. Love means not
only that which is in between a love couple. It also means the love you have
for street dogs, the sympathy you have for aged people and orphans, the
happiness you get when you spend time with your parents, etc. So have time to
care for this world also and make your own small world happy on this lovely
day. Nevertheless, Happy Valentine’s Day.
