5 Good & Bad Things About Suicide Squad

Author: Shanmukha Kotha (My Fuckin' Opinion)

Suicide Squad is one of the most anticipated movie from the DC universe from the day it released it's trailer. As the movie hit the screens worldwide and as we all know it received a mixed bag of reviews. Rotten Tomatoes' & Metacritic's rating are like sledgehammers to the makers of the film with less than 50% ratings. But is Suicide Squad really 2015's 'Fantastic Four' bad or 'Amazing Spider Man:2' bad or 'Thor: The Dark World' bad. You know what, I actually liked the movie. Yes, you heard me right! May be because of my lowered expectations after watching all the negative reviews or because I am a hardcore DC comics fan. It may not be as great DC film as The Dark Knight Trilogy but after death blows from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel & Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad helps them to stay in the race. Before going to the movie I'm really excited about the Joker, which is out of the whole pack of bad guys, is the most well known anti-hero character in the DC universe. It is mostly because of the Nolan's epic "The Dark Knight" and Heath Ledger's unforgettable performance as the Gotham's twisted baddie. Even though I have not watched much of Harley Quinn and Deadshot, but I'm really awaiting to see how Margot Robbie and Will Smith fit into those characters. But did they deliver? What are the good things and the bad things from David Ayer's Suicide Squad? Let us see.

THE GOOD THINGS

1. Joker and Harley Quinn's twisted love story

Joker and Harley Quinn are the most crazy and twisted love pair. The way the movie established their relationship and the backstory of Harley was quite impressive.

2. The Batman & Flash cameo

Batman's cameo catching Deadshot and Harley Quinn is an uproar. And the final scene where Bruce Wayne was seen recruiting The Justice League, you would have seen that coming.

3. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie's collusive appeal as Harley Quinn remains undimmed amidst all the negativity. She killed it and you can never imagine anyone who can fill her shoes.

4. Deadshot

Will Smith did total justice to his role as Batman's villain 'Deadshot'. He actually lead the whole squad and can be called the hero among the baddies. He got all the laughs and humor along with some light moments with his daughter. He is a total asset.

5. The Music & Soundtracks

Suicide Squad has some deadly music and thumping soundtracks that elevated the mood of the scenes which are majorly action. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Skrillex Purple Lamborghini, Eminem's Without Me, Twenty One Pilot's Heathens added a lot of upbeat to the bad-ass heroes.

THE BAD THINGS

1. Enchantress

Cara Delevingne, the model turned horrible actress. She is just disappointing that you actually don't know why you hate her, Is it because Enchantress sucks or Cara?

2. Not enough of Joker

Biggest disappointment. Joker don't get anymore screen rant than he got in the trailer. To the hardcore fans of Heath Ledger's Joker, this just added flames. With this little screen presence we can't judge Jared Leto's performance. Definitely, he didn't fill Ledger's shoes but he made a decent attempt.

3. Poor Story Telling

David Ayer's story telling is poor. This does not seem like the guy who directed 'Fury'. All he did was following the footsteps of Zack Snyder's mediocrity. He neither did much damage nor damage control.

4. Too much focus on action

The weightage of action is too high. May be they might have concentrated much on the large ensemble of characters rather than the high octane neon lighted action sequences. I am not saying the action sequences are bad but that is lot much.

5. Many Marvel cliches

Marvel is action filled and humorous. DC is shrouded in darkness in both characterization and story telling. But DC comics trying to fill the movie with action sequences and forced humor is something that don't go well with the DC fanbase. The huge success of 'Guardians of Galaxy', 'Deadpool' and 'Captain America:Civil War' surely pushed the DC into defense after Zack Snyder's damage. But we are still waiting for Wonder Women, Justice League, Aquaman, The Flash. Not to paint themselves with humorous story telling that is offered by Marvel but the dark and mystic sense of DC.
